[Feature] Melancholic Rain Frown: Catching up with AJ Suede

Rapper/producer AJ Suede will go down as one of the most prolific underground rappers. Steadily releasing cohesive and bar-heavy projects, Suede has already delivered with three EPs in the last three months. Let’s get familiar.

Most recently, we received Rain Based, which came fully produced by cloud rap icon Keyboard Kid. Five songs in length, the EP is lost in the clouds, smooth as hell, and complete with features from BB Sun and BB Rob God. Although Suede is from the East Coast, this is most assuredly a Seattle affair.

Prior to Rain Based, AJ Suede released the five song EP System of a Frown II. It came fully produced by Nedarb (just like the first volume). As a result, it’s dark, it’s haunted, it’s full of hi hats. Suede really shines on the track “Made a Difference”, which demands a quality sound system.

Before these two executively produced EPs, Suede dropped the six song Melancholy Trill II. Recorded in Seattle, it’s a unique release as it features a different producer on every track. With familiar names like BB Sun, Wolftone, and JPEGMAFIA, the project goes down as a quality first release of Suede’s 2018. With three already in the ring, we can certainly expect more as the year progresses.

[EP] Squid Ethics – Malheureusement

Irish producer Squid Ethics is one of my favorites at the moment and his instrumental tapes never grow old. On top of having just released the EP Malheureusement, he clumped his five EPs and one album into one comprehensive playlist. Press play and float away properly for one hour exactly.

[Mixtape] Leaf Set – FILM

Are you up to speed with the Set? The Illinois collective Leaf Set released a twelve track project back in December known as Film. With different pieces of art for every track, it feels like a slideshow in your mind, spanning across genres and time. Step inside with caution, step inside with dilated eyes.

[Mixtape] ZMoney & ChaseTheMoney – ZTM

It’s been out for a couple of months, but it’s necessary that we talk about this ZMoney tape right now. The seven song project is fully produced by ChaseTheMoney and features heater after heater. The standout here is “Look Up” with Chicago rapper Valee. Enjoy the video above and the full project below. Stay awake forever.

[Album] HM Surf – Waterbed

Twenty three beats courtesy of Hm Surf. Based out of Oslo, the Norwegian producer came correct with Waterbed, a 40 minute offering of lofi instrumentals. With a name like Waterbed and a production moniker that alludes to riding waves, it’s only right that you enjoy this one seaside or in a pool or in a hot tub. The choice is yours.

[EP] Chlorine Mist – Reset

Dylan Reznick of production duo Friendzone (RIP James Laurence) has a solo project known as Chlorine Mist. He’s been teasing and releasing tracks over the years and has now continued his journey through an electrified and ambient release known as Reset. Made up of four songs and ranging from three minutes to sixteen, the project showcases and hones in on the solo talents of Reznick. Stream it up above or grab it via UK electronic label Donky Pitch here: https://donkypitch.bandcamp.com/album/reset

[Album] Brennan Savage – Badlands

L.A.-based Brennan Savage released the ten song project Badlands last month. Almost entirely produced by Savage himself (handling six of the tracks), the project also features production from Horse Head (who opens and closes the project) as well as Killstation, Lederrick, and Brobak. Spin the quick project back a second time and learn how to punch through windows.

[Mixtape] CHXPO – So Icey Deathrow

As rapper CHXPO is currently on tour with Ghostemane and Nedarb and Wavey Jone$ (as of November 3), he decided to let loose the fifteen track mixtape So Icey Deathrow before taking to the road. The 46 minute project is packed with energy and aggression, perfect for all of the impending mosh pits across the country. Shout-out to producer Loko Los for handling almost half of this project.
